Rolled Paper Preview in Photoshop

This tutorial will show you how to make a rolled paper preview in Photoshop.  This tutorial was written in Photoshop CS3.  It requires the plugin Mura Meister's Stripe of Cylinder.

Supplies:

1.  Open up the papers that you want to preview in Photoshop.  For this tutorial, I am using five of my papers from my Funkadelic kit.

2.  Select your first paper.  This is your Primary Canvas.

3.  In that image, create a new layer.  I named it Rolled Preview.

4.  Apply Mura Meister's Stripe of Cylinder plugin to the layer.  Number defaults to 3.  Change it to match the number of papers that will be previewed.

5.  Choose your second paper. Select All (Ctrl + A) and Copy (Ctrl + C).

6.  Go back to your Primary Canvas.  In the layer palette, select the Background layer.

7.  Paste (Ctrl + V).  The second paper is now between the Background Layer and the Rolled Preview Layer.

8.  Select the Move Tool, if it isn't already selected.

9.  Move the second paper over so that it is situated under the second stripe.

10.  Select your next paper.  Select All (Ctrl + A) and Copy (Ctrl + C).

11.  Go back to your first paper and Paste (Ctrl + V).  This will place the new paper between the last paper and the Rolled Preview layer.

12.  Move the layer so that it is under the next stripe.

13.  Repeat steps 10-12 until all the papers have been placed on the Primary Canvas.

The rolled paper preview is now complete.

Here is the template for Grinch-y.  It is two layers.  One has the letters and the other has the cutouts.  Add a paper or style of your choice.  The file is in PSD format.

I thought this cookie alpha might look better with some sprinkles, so I made a second version.  Only the lower case letters today.  You can get the upper case tomorrow.  I am so exhausted.  I really need to start making these alphas in the summer.  Getting the last few done was very hard and I don't think my alphas this year are as inventive as they were last year.

This is the lower case to the plain Christmas Cookie alpha.  The files are quite big for some reason.  I guess I made the letters too large.  I'm releasing these separately because I made the upper case and then realized after uploading those zip files that I had not made a lower case.

I made red because it was so festive and blue because ice and snow is blue-hued.  Here is the second sticker-like alpha.

I am a pretty terrible scrap kit maker.  For next year, I am considering the possibility that I will stop making scrap kits. Instead, I am going to make designer tools and write tutorials.  I will continue to make alphas from time to time, but I will no longer be making complete kits.  As part of this process, I have created a Google group for anyone who is interested in:

I'm not sure how well this will work.  Like all things, it is an experiment.

I'm not sure if this alpha fits into the Christmas season, but the letters and numbers are red.  I hope people can use them to seal letters to Santa or envelopes.
